Anakin’s lightsaber is a reflection of an eventful and dark history… We often forget that he even had two!
The transition from one sword to the other is however a breaking point. This symbolizes his transformation from a young Padawan to an experienced Jedi Master who can defeat the formidable Siths.
But most importantly, his second lightsaber will also be used by Luke, Rey and Kylo Ren!
Two swords : two stories

Anakin’s first saber was created by the famous Jedi Master Qui-Gon-Jinn. The latter dies from Darth Maul’s lightsaber, and Anakin gets his sword back. Unfortunately, Anakin loses his first saber during the battle of Geonosis.
To replace the latter he will create a second saber, which will become the “Skywalker saber”. With the approval of Yoda and the Jedi Council, he will travel with Kenobi to Ilum to build this new weapon. It is with this new lightsaber that Anakin will be called “The Fearless Hero”.
This sword has a tragic history… It is with this one that he committed the atrocities which led to his tipping over to the dark side. After abandoning the sword in space, he remained untraceable for many years…
Through its tumultuous history, Anakin’s lightsaber remains an iconic element of the Star Wars franchise, symbolizing both :
- The tragedy of Anakin’s fall, the descent of this legendary character to the dark side of the Force and his transformation into Darth Vader, caused by his fears, his anger and his desire to save his wife.
- On the other hand we see the hope of his son Luke who is training to bring his father back to the light side of the Force. It is in “Return of the Jedi” that we discover the fate of Anakin’s saber. In this film, Luke retrieves Vader’s lightsaber and uses it to defeat Vader and Emperor Palpatine.
Anakin’s lightsaber has been passed down from generation to generation in the Skywalker family, becoming a symbol of their family’s legacy and continuity.
Legacy of the sword
This lightsaber has become more than just a weapon, it is a symbol of strength that has inspired generations of fans around the world.
How did it later become Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber?
After Anakin Skywalker’s death, the lightsaber remained hidden for many years. Finally, Luke Skywalker finds it in the wreckage of his father’s spaceship.
Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber has also become a symbol of hope and light in the Star Wars universe. It marks Luke Skywalker’s determination to follow the path of justice, even in the darkest of times.
Characteristics of Anakin’s lightsaber

Anakin’s lightsaber is distinguished by its chrome color and black edges on the lower part of its handle. The inside of the handle holds a blue Kyber crystal giving birth to a blue blade, symbol of the Jedi order!
Indeed, blue swords represent justice and protection. They are used by Jedi knights such as Cal Kestis and Aayla Secura, who are committed to fighting for the light side of the Force.
It is possible to observe a certain resemblance between this saber and the famous Yoda’s lightsaber, both having a serrated handle and a chrome emitter. Since Anakin fashioned his own sword, this design choice reflects his admiration for Yoda.
Anakin chose to focus on strength by opting for a reinforced hull combined with internal circuitry and an energy cell.
His weapon is particularly powerful and maneuverable, which corresponds to the V form of combat, otherwise known as the Djem So.
Focus on the color of the sword
The colors of lightsabers are full of unknown meanings. It is worth remembering that :
- The original color of Anakin’s first saber was blue, as a Jedi.
- When he turned to the dark side of the Force, he created a new red lightsaber, which shows anger, hatred and aggression.
- Anakin’s red lightsaber is a symbol of his betrayal of the Jedi Brotherhood and his allegiance to the Sith Empire.
The link between the sword and Anakin’s personality
A Jedi’s sword is often a reflection of the personality of its creator. Anakin Skywalker’s is therefore just like him: impetuous and unpredictable.
Like any civilization, the Jedi have their own customs. Among them, there is the one that wants the sword of a Padawan to be the image of his Master. It is noticeable that the second saber created by Anakin bears no resemblance to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s saber. This choice reflects the young Jedi’s fierce and indomitable personality and his disregard for tradition.
In crafting his weapon, Anakin has chosen to place special emphasis on attacking movements, revealing his thirst for power and might…
It’s worth remembering that Jedi with blue lightsabers place more emphasis on mastering lightsaber combat than on using the force. This information, confirmed by George Lucas, is significant when you consider that Anakin was far more gifted in combat techniques than in mastering his emotions and strength. In this, his blue lightsaber was perfectly in tune with his personality!
The young Jedi has created his own lightsaber, which demonstrates:
- a desire to break away from the grip of the Jedi community
- a desire to assert oneself as a unique personality
- a precursor of his future switch to the dark side of the Force
Finally, it is important to note that Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber has also undergone several improvements and modifications over time. Anakin was very ingenious; for example, he had created C-3PO as a child.
For example, the handle of the sword has been replaced to be more ergonomic, while the lens has been adjusted to produce a brighter and more accurate blade.
The power of Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber
Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber is a rather unique weapon. It has allowed him to become one of the greatest Jedi warriors in the galaxy. But the true power of this lightsaber is not where you think… It comes from the way Anakin used it!
He wasn’t content to simply work magic with the Force. He fought with an incredibly sophisticated technique!
Designed to be fast and powerful, Anakin’s sword has several unique features that made it a true technological masterpiece.
1. First, the design of the handle was specifically designed to be ergonomic. This allowed Anakin to hold his saber safely even in the most intense combat. The wrap-around shape of the handle provided a comfortable grip, while allowing Anakin to quickly grab it when he needed to draw.
2. Second, the blue plasma blade was another unique feature of Anakin’s lightsaber. This bright and distinctive color was actually the result of a special setting of the plasma source.
Throughout his story, Anakin proved that it was his speed and agility that allowed his sword to unleash its full potential. He was not only able to fight with devastating force. He also showed a breathtaking grace and fluidity!
The fights of Anakin Skywalker and his famous saber

Two of his battles were particularly notable.
Anakin versus Obi-Wan
The first of these two battles took place in Star Wars, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi confronted Count Dooku, also known as Darth Tyranus. This intense battle was led in large part by Anakin. Armed with his blue lightsaber, he has proven more powerful than ever since their last confrontation on Geonosis. However, although the Jedi Knight did not wish to kill Dooku, he was forced to do so under the Chancellor’s orders, despite his convictions.
Revenge of the Sith
The second battle involving Anakin took place in the final film of the second trilogy, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. This duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most famous in the Star Wars saga.
It began after Anakin made hurtful comments to his former companions. Then, differing opinions widened the distance between Padme and him. But when he saw Obi-Wan in his wife’s ship, he thought it was a betrayal. In anger, Anakin strangled his wife with the Force before releasing his grip to begin a fierce battle with his former master.
In his battle with Obi-Wan-Kenobi on the planet Mustafar, Anakin truly shines with his variety of moves. Unfortunately, his overinflated ego coupled with an overconfidence in his abilities will cause him to miss out on victory. Beaten by Kenobi, Anakin loses both his legs and his arm. Here, it’s clear that the student doesn’t always surpass the master. Kenobi will have taken down a host of enemies, including Grievous and Darth Maul.
