Since the first appearance of Star Wars in 1977, lightsabers have fascinated fans of the saga around the world. The lightsaber fights have become emblematic of the franchise. Lightsaber academies have even developed in France!
But did you know that each lightsaber color has a special meaning? In this article, we will explore the hidden meanings behind the colors of Star Wars lightsabers.
A weapon that reflects the soul
Jedi and Sith must build their own lightsabers to complete their training in the Force.
The color of a lightsaber depends on the Kyber crystals it contains. The Jedi choose their crystals by forcing a bond with them, while the Sith create them synthetically.
The colors of lightsabers can reveal information about the Jedi or Sith using them, such as:
- their connection to the Force
- their fighting ability
- their control of emotions
This is why it is often said that the sword reflects the soul. The color of the sword says a lot about the personality of its bearer.
The hidden meaning of lightsaber colors
Let’s start with the classics…
Red lightsaber: hate & violence

Red lightsabers are associated with characters who use the dark side of the Force. They are created using Kyber crystals that are “wounded” by their use to give the blade the red color.
These swords represent:
- the unleashing of passions
- the inability to control one’s emotions
- the inspiration of fear
- hatred towards others
- violence without mercy
The Sith use red lightsabers almost exclusively. The color red became an easy way to identify them after Dark Bane‘s rule of two.
Famous characters who use red lightsabers include Darth Sidious, Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Lord Tyranus, Darth Revan and Kylo Ren.
PS: we wrote an article about the unknown history of Darth Vader’s lightsaber.
Blue lightsaber: a Jedi weapon

If you aspire to be a Jedi, then blue is the color for you!
The blue swords represent the following principles:
- straightness
- bravery
- dedication to others
- emotional detachment
The blue lightsabers are wielded by the Jedi guards. These Jedi are the most experienced in lightsaber combat. They are the best duelists in the Order. This is why they use the force less than other Jedi and prefer sword fighting, their specialty!
The blue lightsaber has been used by such renowned figures as Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Cal Kestis, Aayla Secura and Ezra Bridger. With this saber, you can feel like a true member of the Jedi Order!

Green lightsaber: a sixth sense

The green lightsaber is almost a sixth sense: Jedis can sense what is going on around them and draw quick conclusions. They are often used by older jedis. For example, Yoda’s lightsaber is green.
Specifically, the color green is synonymous with:
- wisdom
- spirituality
- harmony
- cooperation
- thorough knowledge of the Force
Green lightsabers are generally used by Jedi who have a strong connection to the Force. They are common among Jedi Consulars, one of the three paths a Jedi can take after ascending to the rank of Jedi Knight.
Qui-Gon Jinn, Luke Skywalker and Master Yoda are known owners of green sabers. They are like the big brothers of the Force. Moreover, only Jedi consulars can continue to exist after the death of their corporeal form by merging with the Force. This explains the appearances of Yoda in the saga after his death.
Imagine the power of becoming part of the energy of life itself! So if you want to feel more connected to the universe and be the ultimate Jedi, go for a green lightsaber!
Purple lightsaber: a balance of the Force

If you want to be the most mysterious Jedi in your galaxy, then the purple lightsaber is for you!
The holder of such a lightsaber must be
- daredevil
- bold
- aggressive
- fearless
The most famous purple lightsaber wielder was Jedi Master Mace Windu. He was one of the few Jedi strong enough to practice Form VII: a style of lightsaber combat that required a Jedi to come dangerously close to the Dark Side.
So if you want to be a Jedi who plays with fire, Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber is for you!
Magenta lightsaber: a compassionate marker

If you’re looking for a lightsaber that’s out of the ordinary, then the magenta lightsaber is for you!
This sword color is the symbol of:
- compassion
- femininity
- the charm
It is not used much in the Star Wars universe, but it has been used by one of the most famous legendary characters: Mara Jade, Luke Skywalker’s wife.
Mara Jade She received this unique crystal from Emperor Palpatine, in appreciation for her services as Hand of the Emperor. Unfortunately, she lost her blade in a duel after the battle of Endor. That’s why she later built a purple lightsaber to become a Jedi Knight in the New Jedi Order.
If you want to stand out from the classic Jedi, magenta is the lightsaber color for you!
Yellow lightsaber: the Sentinels’ weapon

Yellow lightsabers are rare among the Jedi Order. The famous Jedi Plo Koon, Ahsoka Tano and Rey Skywalker are known to have wielded this color blade.
The yellow lightsaber symbolizes:
- diplomatic and negotiating power
- the wise woman
- serenity
- an agile, fast and precise fighting style
Yellow lightsabers are primarily associated with Jedi Sentinels. This is one of three paths available to Padawans after they become Jedi Knights.
The Sentinels understood that the Force could not solve everything. That’s why they used a lot of practical knowledge to be spies or technicians. Also, they were real diplomats.
The yellow color reflects a balance between the green of the Jedi Consular and the blue of the Jedi Guardian.
White lightsaber: a weapon for the rebellious

The white lightsaber refers to several ideas:
- independence
- neutrality
- the refusal of submission to the established order
White lightsabers are relatively rare in the Star Wars saga. Although they were used in the High Republic era, their modern use is primarily associated with the character ofAhsoka Tano. Ahsoka, a former apprentice ofAnakin Skywalker, left the Jedi Order on bad terms and had to give up the use of her two green lightsabers.
It was on the agricultural moon Raada, after an encounter with a Sixth Brother of Inquisitorius, that she created the white lightsabers. The color white symbolizes his evolution as a Jedi and his desire to distance himself from his past and his mistakes.
Black lightsaber: a weapon that can be won

The black lightsaber represents:
- the ability to train a group
- prestige
- a great fighting technique
Created by the renowned Mandalorian Tarre Vizla, this real saber is one of a kind, with a black plasma blade curved like a traditional blade. It has the incredible ability to draw other blades to it, making attacks against its holder almost impossible.
With the black sword, Vizla has become the ultimate ruler of his home planet, and now you can be the next to dominate the battlefield. He was introduced in the series The Mandalorian. To become the owner of this rare jewel, you must defeat its current handler in a duel to the death. So, are you ready to take the challenge and become the next Mandalorian?
NB: there are, however, some misunderstandings and mysteries surrounding the color of the sword of certain characters in the saga. Grievous, for example, had notably blue and green sabers.
